ABOUT ROATAN

The Bay Islands of Honduras offer a very different world from mainland Honduras . The islands’ history, which includes many disputes between the Spaniards and the British during colonial times (with the British actually controlling the islands most of time) have given the islands a unique heritage. There are several islands within the department, with the three largest ones being the most popular with tourists: Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. English is so widely spoken in the Bay Islands that some people don't even speak Spanish, despite the fact that this is the official language of Honduras!

Roatan's modern international airport is only a short flight from the gateway cities of Houston, Atlanta, New York, Toronto and Miami .

You'll receive a warm greeting from our friendly, bilingual (English & Spanish) population whose ancestral origins are a combination of the eight separate cultures that both fought and flourished here during the past 400 years.

Only 30 miles long and three miles wide, slender Roatan is the largest and most developed of the eight islands and more than 60 cays that make up the Bay Islands of Honduras .

Paved roads, well-stocked supermarkets, telephone and wireless internet are all available but the island is still a small, tropical paradise…and one of the best-kept secrets in the Caribbean.
